Whirlpool Wall Oven Door Hinge Failure 2020 | CPSC

This whirlpool wall recall affects specific model numbers. Read the details below to check if your unit is included and what action to take.

Whirlpool wall oven door hinge failure recall 2020 covers WOS and WOD series single and double wall ovens where a hinge arm fatigue defect allows the oven door to drop open suddenly and without warning, posing a burn, crush, and fall injury risk to consumers.

Why This Matters

An oven door that drops open unexpectedly can cause hot food, dishes, or oven racks to slide out onto the consumer or floor, and the door edge itself can cause crush injuries to feet and hands. Whirlpool and the CPSC received 112 reports of sudden door drop incidents, including 19 burn injuries and four incidents where the door fell open while children were nearby. An estimated 220,000 wall ovens are covered by this recall.

Affected Models

Recalled wall ovens include WOS51EC0HS, WOS72EC0HS, WOD51EC0HS, WOD77EC0HS, WOS11EM4ES, and related WOS/WOD built-in single and double wall oven models. The model and serial number plate is located on the oven door frame, visible when the door is open. Units with serial numbers beginning with “R” through “T” are primarily affected.

Production and Sale Dates

Affected wall ovens were manufactured between May 2018 and February 2020 and sold at appliance dealers, home improvement centers, and kitchen showrooms for approximately $1,099 to $2,799.

Required Action Steps

  1. Inspect your wall oven door immediately — if it does not stay in a partially open position when released at a 45-degree angle, the hinge may already be failing.
  2. Contact Whirlpool at 1-866-698-2538 to schedule a free hinge assembly replacement by a certified technician.
  3. Do not use the oven until the hinge has been replaced — if the door must be opened, have a second adult present to support it.
  4. Keep children out of the kitchen area whenever the oven is in use or the door is open.
  5. Do not attempt to repair or wedge the hinge yourself — improper repairs may worsen the hazard.
